Essential Tours and Travel Bureau has donated K100 000 (US$250) to the mini-Olympic Games scheduled to start on Novermber 21.

The firm, which started operating last year, said it decided to chip in into the games after being approached by the tournament’s organising committee.

“We readily agreed to assist knowing that the majority of Malawians love sports. It is not much, but we hope the money will assist greatly during the event,” said the company’s director Chriswel Luwayo.

He urged companies to invest in sports because it unites a country’s people.

“We also responded to the request as part of our social obligation to the people of Malawi. This is just the beginning of our investments in sports,” said Luwayo.

Chairperson of the mini-Olympic Games organising committee James Mwenda expressed gratitude to Essential Tours for the gesture.

“We are appreciative to Essential Tours. It is not easy for companies to part with such money these days. We are yet to meet the budget, so we value such a contribution greatly,” said Mwenda.

Over 176 Olympians will participate in the first-ever mini-Olympic Games which will ran from November 21-23.

“We are glad to announce that all the invited sports associations have confirmed participation. As you know, the Games will be a yardstick for measuring the quality of athletes to send to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and also the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil,” said Mwenda.
