Align goals with govt’s agro policies—Minister
Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has called on players in the agricultural sector to align their goals with government policies if the country is to make advances.
The minister made the call in Lilongwe on Wednesday during the launch of the National Agriculture Policy, the National Irrigation Policy and the Agriculture Land Resources Management Policy.
Kawale said all stakeholders in the agricultural sector have critical roles in ensuring the success of the policies.
He said: “It is, therefore, my earnest plea to everyone in the agriculture sector to study these policies diligently, understand their provisions, and implement initiatives that align with their objectives.”
Kawale said policies were developed after a thorough review of predecessor documents and also incorporated valuable lessons and experiences gained from their implementation.
Said Kawale: “The National Agriculture Policy complements the Malawi 2063 and its First 10-Year Implementation Plan by further detailing the s t r a t e g i e s and actions required within the agriculture sector to achieve economic transformation.
“ R e c o g n i s i n g t h e i m p o r t a n c e o f irrigation development and sustainable land management in boosting agricultural productivity, bot h the Nat iona l Irrigation Policy and the Agriculture Land Resources Management Policy elaborate on priority areas within the National Agriculture Policy.”
In his remarks, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) Vice-Chancellor Emmanuel Kaunda said the university will, among other areas, contribute to human capital development and research, .
Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) chief executive officer Jacob Nyirongo said the union will work closely with farmers to adopt technologies that will enhance and improve productivity in the face of climate change. Delegates to the launch included representatives of FUM, Luanar and Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
