All set for Mwenda, Mwando bout

Malawi’s reigning middleweight boxing champion Alick Mwenda has declared that Zimbabwean Brian Mwando will not last the distance today [Sunday] afternoon when the two take to the ring in a non-title professional bout at Mkango Lodge in Blantyre.

The fight is unique in that this will be the first time the popular lodge will stage a bout. It is also expected to be fiery and passionate.

The two boxers stepped up the flurry of mind games during the weigh-in function held at College of Medicine Sports Complex on Saturday.

Mwenda, 27, said he is set for the showdown and wants to silence Mwando once and for all.

“This guy talks a lot and tomorrow [today] I will shut him up and force him to pack his belongings and head back to Harare.

“I have been eagerly counting the days and at long last, this is it. I will finish him off,” declared Mwenda

These were bold words indeed from the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier, but whether he will fulfil his desire remains to be seen.

He also appealed to Malawians to patronise the bout and cheer him on.

Mwenda has a record of 11 wins, three losses and a draw since he rose to the professional ranks while Mwando has won six [including five knockouts], lost two and his other bout was declared a no-contest.

Apparently, he suffered both losses at the hands of Chimwemwe ‘Chipembere’ Chiotcha.

Mwenda also spoke tough ahead of the fight, saying he will leave it to his jabs to do the talking.

“This is his [Mwenda’s] time, but when we get into the ring, it will be my turn. I think its wiser to let your jabs do the talking,” said the 22-year-old pugilist.

The bout comes exactly a week after another contest between Chiotcha and another Zimbabwean Charles Manyuchi failed to take place.

But promoter of tomorrow’s bout Justice Katika of Mchinji Boys Boxing Promotions gave his word that all is set for the bout.

“I want to assure all boxing fans that arrangements, such as contractual agreements, have been finalised and they should come to watch the bout from the comfort of their seats at Mkango Lodge.

“Both boxers are set for the showdown and the spectators should expect an exciting contest,” said Katika.

According to him, the supporting bout will be between upcoming boxers Boniface Stenala and Aubrey Masamba.
