The 2013 Carlsberg Cup kicks off this Friday in all the three regions of Malawi with 40 teams from lower division leagues battling for a place in the last 16.

Speaking after conducting the first regional draw for the preliminary round of the competition, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka said his office expects a lot of upsets and suprises in the competition this year.

“The competition is starting on July 7 and more games in the preliminary round will be played on Saturday. The draw we have conducted shows there will be a tight competition. As FAM, we have a lot of expectations and we are looking forward to another exciting tournament,” he said.

According to Zakazaka, Southern Region has contributed the largest number of teams (20) followed by the Northern Region which has 12 whereas the Central Region has registered eight teams.

He said from the 40, nine teams will be identified—four, two and three from South, Centre and Northern regions respectively.

“The arrangement is that the regional play offs will be played between June 7 and July 7, 2013 and after that, nine best teams from the regional play offs will meet Super Leagues teams in the national finals,” he said.

Carlsberg Malawi brands manager (alcoholic) Twikale Chirwa said Carlsberg Malawi wants to contribute to football development and they too are looking forward to an exciting tournament.
