Araujo, Mbilizi shine in Kingfisher Golf

Paul Araujo and Roza Mbilizi on Saturday turned on a spirited performance to win the Kingfisher Invitational Golf Tournament played in breezy conditions at Nchalo Sports Club (NSC) in Chikwawa.

Araujo, whose putting and shots were faultless, posted 40 points and went away with  a KIC upright refrigerator and a trophy.

“I was relaxed and enjoyed my game, the course was also playing well. Thanks to Kingfisher for hosting such a wonderful tournament, we really had fun out there on the course,” he said.

Araujo pipped his runner-up Eric Chapola with just a point while Hamilton Zungu was third with 36 points. Chapola received a Defy microwave.

In ladies category, Roza Mbilizi who is ranked the best female golfer on the local scene, defended the women’s  title with 32 points while Teri Amaro breathed down her neck to finish second with 31 points.

Mbilizi went home with a Defy gas stove and a trophy whereas Amaro got a Salton pressure cooker.

In her victory speech, Mbilizi who also had the longest drive, said: “It felt really good to defend the title. The course is playing very well and thanks to Kingfisher for such a treat.”

With 36 points, Bregger Kaingwe won the Nchalo-based golfers’ category whereas James ‘JJ’ Chikapa emerged triumphant in seniors section.

Youthful Gilton Chiwaula had the longest drive while E. Mbesa was nearest to the pin.

The insurance brokers and consultants firm’s managing director Henry Sisya pledged continued sponsorship of the event.

“This was the sixth edition and we are still counting. We host this tournament as one way of thanking our customers such as Illovo  Sugar [Malawi].

“It also provides us an opportunity to interact with existing and potential customers and get their feedback on our services,” he said.

Sisya also said as a leading local insurance broker, their vision is to be the most sought after brokering firm.

NSC golf captain John Mphande hailed Kingfisher for its continued sponsorship and the golfers for braving the chilly conditions to take part in the tournament. n
