Battle for points hots up in regional leagues

Battles for TNM Super League promotion have intensified in the regional leagues as the season heads towards the climax.

In the Chipiku Stores Central Region Football Association (CRFA) Premier Division, Kasungu Police faltered in their quest to close the gap with leaders Mlatho Mponela when they collected three points out of a possible six.

They lost 1-0 away at Mbabvi United on Saturday, but recovered with a 6-1 thumping of Nambuma United at home the following day.

Mponela lead Kasungu with five points

On the other hand, leaders Mlatho Mponela drew 2-2 against Mtsiriza United.

Mlatho Mponela lead the 20-team log table with 72 points while Kasungu Police are second on 67 points. Both teams have played 35 games.

Holy Cross Ambassadors are also in close pursuit after beating Airborne Rangers 5-2 and are third on 66 points.

Mlatho general secretary Yohane Banda said they will keep on fighting to the very end.

“It is important that we keep up the momentum and try not to lose ground. The pressure will be on Kasungu Police because Holy Cross are also breathing down their neck. It’s going to be tough, but we will make it,” he said.

In the Chitetezo Mbaula Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier Division, Ntopwa FC still top the 22-team league, followed by Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve.

Ntopwa were held to a one-all draw by Hangover FC and have taken their tally to 62 points from 30 games.  They are two points above Bullets Reserve, who, however, have a game in hand.

Bullets Reserve collected just a point from a possible six having lost 1-0 to eighth-placed Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side Changalume Barracks before playing out a one-all draw against 15th-placed Nyasa United.

Another MDF side Cobbe Barracks are on third position with 56 points from 28 games. Cobbe thrashed White Eagles 4-0 on Saturday. MDF Marine are fourth with 54 points from 27 games following their two straight wins over weekend over Prison United and Eshani Wizards by 1-0 margins.

Fastani Chilikuntima of Nyasa United leads the Golden Boot Award chase with 25 goals followed by Bullets Reserve forward Hassan Kajoke with 23 goals.

SRFA vice-general secretary Kingsley Simbeye said the race for the championship is getting hot each passing week.
