Blantyre derby sets new record revenue
The latest episode of the Blantyre derby, which featured age-old rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday set a new gross revenue record of K88.3 million at club level.
The FDH Bank Cup Round of 16, which saw the People’s Team emerging 2-1 winners, beat the K80.495 million record set during a TNM Super League encounter between the two teams in May this year.
Wanderers, who were the home team, Bullets and stadium owners, Ministry of Youth and Sports, got K18.6 million each, Football Association of Malawi received K14.6 million, K14.8 million went towards expenses while Malawi National Council of Sports got K3.66 million.
Both teams said they were satisfied with the revenue, which reflected the huge turnout.
Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said: “The stadium was full yesterday [Sunday] and tickets were sold out in all categories.
“We are impressed with the way people showed up to watch the game. The gross realised is impressive and would have been more if we had closed a number of issues at the gates.”
His Bullets counterpart Albert Chigoga said: “We are satisfied, big turnout equalled the gross revenue.”
