Blantyre DHO lauded for best performance

Blantyre district health promotion officer Chrissy Banda has expressed excitement with the 2023/24 best performance award in the heath sector.

In an interview on Wednesday, she attributed the success to a number of factors, including resilience and collaboration with stakeholders.

Emphasize that the decision to end the VOS scheme was made without prior communication or formal notice.

Said Banda: “As a district heath office [DHO], we are celebrating the 2023/24 victory as we have been recognised as the best performing council of the year in health, achieving 100 percent score in the Local Authority Performance Assessment for two consecutive years [2022/23 and 2023/24).

“Other factors include timely drug requisition processes, effective supervision of health facilities, with at least 80 percent of health centres receiving quarterly mentorship and support from our district health management team.”

She said the DHO strengthened community engagement and participation in health services planning and delivery by establishing and training health centre management committees in health facilities.

Banda also said the district’s director of health and social services Gift Kawalazira won the Best Director of Health of the Year 2023 Award.

“We have also won the best council in expanded programme on immunisation in the Southern Region as we vaccinated over 85 percent of under-two children,” she said.

The district’s health services administrator Chetimilia Saidi said the district has embarked on construction of new facilities with support from various partners to ensure that every citizen has access to healthcare services to achieve universal health coverage as stipulated in the Health Sector Strategic Plan III
