Blue Eagles target seven straight wins

Blue Eagles chairperson George Kainja, facing an empty-handed finish to the season, has challenged his charges to win the remaining TNM Super League seven games and claim their first championship.

Kainja said this yesterday when asked about their target for the season which is dragging to an end with the cops having missed out on the Presidential Cup, Carlsberg Cup and the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy.

“We started the season on top and we want to finish at the top. Our target is to win all the remaining seven games. In life, you have to be positive. An ambition is an ambition. It may be realised or not,” he argued.

To achieve that, the Eagles who have 34 points from 21 games must cope with the absence for substitute goalkeepers Chimwemwe Chitedze and Elia Msukwa for six months each. Eagles are two points behind leaders Red Lions.

The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) suspended and fined K100 000 each of the players for assaulting referee Andy Kuseli and his assistant Harry Bitilinyu during 3-2 loss to Big Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium a fortnight ago, leaving first-choice custodian John Soko only.

The Nankhaka ground outfit has since signed on loan from Kasungu Police via Msundwe United ‘keeper Victor Banda, Kainja said. Assistant coach Peter Mgangira, who appeared to have fallen out with management, has since returned after sorting out ‘small issues’.

Eagles captain John ‘CJ’ Banda shared Kainja’s optimism that they can win seven games on the trot, adding yesterday: “Our aim is to win the championship. We have agreed that winning the championship should be our consolation.”

Teams standing in the Eagles’ path include Kamuzu Barracks, Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers. The Derklerk Msakakuona side will not be in league action this weekend.
