Briefing by MEC chairman

Listen to this article
  • I am here to report that we have received information that many centers across the country are progressing well with polling.

  • We are, however, aware of delays in the opening of some centers in the Central and Southern region. There are reports that there are challenges with the delivery of materials to Polling Centers in these locations that have delayed their opening.

  • The MEC is working with its officers in the field, civil society organizations, political parties and observer groups to identify and address these concerns. In several locations the MEC has already taken action and the voting is progressing. In other locations staff are enroute with materials.

  • For us to be effective in addressing these challenges it is important to allow MEC officials, vehicles and facilities to be allowed to conduct their work unobstructed.

  • We are monitoring the situation closely to allow every voter the opportunity to vote. I must also remind voters that if they are in line to vote at 6pm – they will be allowed to vote. If there are locations that open very late the MEC may extend polling hours in some areas.

  • I encourage all voters to participate in these elections and ask for your patience. We will be providing regular updates on progress from across the country.

  • [1400hrs next statement]

  1. How can Mbendera justify people in Dedza starting voting at 2:56pm???? How is that possible my dear friends? I am really disgusted by his incompetence.
