Bucci dishes out debut album ‘Against the Odds’

For many musicians a debut album is a project that comes early in their careers when they are in the spotlight.

However, Bucci’s debut album Against The Odds (ATO) made a statement about longevity and patience in the industry.

As an artist who has been part of Malawi’s music since 2008, fans might have expected a full-length album years ago, the wait, however, proves worthwhile.

The album opener, which features Cynthia Zonde Zulu, frames Bucci Worldwide as an artist who is conscious of his environment and deliberately positions himself outside it.

Part of the intro goes:

Against the odds…

“In a country where almost everyone sounds and moves the same he chose different…”

The opening line presents the artists’ willingness to sacrifice comfort and quick success in favour of originality.

On the track Proud, Bucci strips things back and speaks from a personal place.

The lyrics give him a chance to reflect on where he has come from and where he is headed.

When he says he is “very, very proud” of himself, it lands with emotional weight. It is not said to impress, but to acknowledge the battles fought, the patience exercised and the strength it has taken to keep going.

Every solid album needs a touch of love and Bucci in is debut delivers it in the right doses. He allows romance and vulnerability to surface naturally.

On tracks such as Steyi, Chibaba, Feel the Something, Lero, Katundu Wa Boma, Lovo and Ndekha, love and romance is shown in its many shades playful, intimate and expressive.

Ndekha in particular has already taken on a life of its own via social media. Fans on TikTok are glued to a dance challenge coined by the artist at 7Arts Dance Studio, extending the song’s energy beyond the album.

Collaboration on the album is another highlight.

Unlike projects where guest artists feel shoehorned into tracks, Bucci’s features feel organic, supporting his vision rather than overshadowing it.

Each collaboration brings distinct and new energy while maintaining a cohesive sound throughout.

Other artists featured in the album include Onesimus, Zeze Kingston, Charisma, Nathaniel Chaluchalu and Oana.

The 13-track album is concise without feeling rushed. After years of releasing singles and collaborations, Bucci finally gives fans a complete body of work that feels intentional and well thought out.

The album captures the range and direction he has been building towards over time.

Explaining the creative journey behind the project, Bucci Worldwide said it was a result of exploring a different direction.

He said: “I had been trying to explore a different direction when it comes to sound and the one person I had in mind reached out to me and that’s when it all began.

“Even better, there was a team behind it all, Porch Time Records, which became the record label I signed to because they are just as daring as me. We worked on it for over a year.”

The album is a fusion of Malawian sound and R ‘n’ B and blends high-energy moments with slow music.

Bucci points out that the project unapologetically explores love in both its hurting and healing forms, touching on intimacy and nightlife while daring to sound different from what dominates the mainstream.

On the collaborations he says : “We went with the organic feel for the progress we were making all throughout the projects, the features were not much anticipated or designed song by song and I feel that’s what make all the collaborations so unique.”

The record label manager Jeremy Koch also weighed in on the artists journey to the release of the album.

“Time Records is a space where creativity feels alive. Bucci found freedom there. He experimented, took risks and poured his truth into every song,” he said.

From the outside it may have seemed like Bucci took his time, but the tracklist proves the wait was worth it because he delivers a debut that is carefully crafted and fully realised.

While many first came to know him through hits such as Maluno, Muyaya, Ngangoma and Pachulu, this album introduces a new, more expansive Bucci.
