It’s here finally. Domestic football heavyweights FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers go toe-to-toe this afternoon at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, as the FDH Bank Premiership gets midway through.
It is a marquee matchup that shreds the nerves of the fans, but there is a lot more in today’s showdown as the two giants—who boast a combined 26 titles in 39 editions—will be aiming to wrap the first round at the summit, which would be a huge boost heading into the final lap.
The Lilongwe-based Bankers, who last won the title in 2024 sit at the pinnacle of the 16-team league on goal difference as they are tied on 29 points with reigning champions Mighty Wanderers from 14 games apiece.
The Nomads are on bye this weekend as their focus will be on their 2026/27 CAF Champions League first preliminary round first leg against Simba Sports Club of Tanzania tomorrow.
On the other hand, Bullets, who last won the flagship league in 2023, are fourth with 27 points.
Silver return to action from a goalless draw against Goshen City Dedza Dynamos at home, while Bullets also played out a barren draw against rookies Luanar Mitundu FC
Silver’s coach Peter ‘Shoes’ Mgangira, sounding ice-cool, said while they anticipate a tough match, they are not in a cold sweat and will fight every inch of the way for a win.
With a boyish grin, as he prepared to take his charges through the last preparatory session, he said: “Not an easy match. We are up against an experienced side and coach.
“Playing away from home is never easy, but we know our opponents and we are ready. We are looking for a positive result because a win could see us finish the first round on a good position.”
His Bullets counterpart Wedson Nyirenda was also cautious, saying Silver are a formidable side.
“I watched them against Civo [United] when I had just arrived in the country. They are a good side and look tactical. They have mature players and that gives us more homework to do and we have done that,” said the Zambian tactician, appearing composed during a pre-match press conference on Thursday.
“It is an explosive fixture and people will watch a good game.”
It stands to be seen whether Nyirenda will hand new-signings, Liberian midfielder Sheku Sheriff and Zimbabwean forward Tinaye Tsimba their debuts.
Striker Ephraim Kondowe, who is the league’s second leading scorer with six goals carries Bullets’ hopes while the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side will look up to Festus Duwe, their captain Zebron Kalima and Festus Duwe.
Silver have also signed striker Daah Rashid Jnr from Luanar Mitundu.
Last season, Bullets beat Silver back-to-back, winning th first round 0-1 and the second round 2-1.
Both teams have lost only once so far this season.
In other fixtures this afternoon, Red Lions host Masters FC at Zomba Stadium, Mafco FC take on Moyale Barracks at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota and Kamuzu Barracks are up against Civil Service (Civo) United at Nankhaka Ground in Lilongwe.
