Bullets fans and their obsession of Eagles goalkeepers’ towels

If there is one thing FCB Nyasa Bullets supporters are obsessed with more than their team, it is apparently Blue Eagles goalkeepers’ towels.

In a bizarre déjà vu moment, Bullets have been officially charged by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) after one of their supporters pulled off a towel-snatching stunt right off the back of Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Waka during a TNM Super League match on July 27 at Kamuzu Stadium.

This marks the second of such incident involving Bullets supporters and a Blue Eagles goalkeeper’s towel.

On October 15, 2022 during another heated clash, with Eagles leading 1-0, Bullets fans stormed the pitch and snatched then-goalkeeper Brighton Munthali’s towel right in front of stewards and police.

Munthali in interview said he was left traumatised by the incident and no wonder in a strange twist, he conceded as the match ended 1-1.

Fast forward to 2025, with the match at the same venue still goalless, another Bullets fan pulled off the same stunt again, in full view of stewards, snatching Waka’s towel and disappeared into the stands.

But this time, karma had other plans as Blue Eagles a few minutes later scored the lone of the game to hand Bullets their third loss in the 2025 season.

Unlike in 2022, Sulom on Wednesday in statement announced it had charged Bullets for the incident.

The statement reads in part: “Following the misconduct that happened during the match between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Blue Eagles FC on the 27th July 2025, the public is informed that Super League of Malawi has charged FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and given [them] 48 hours to respond. The matter will thereafter be looked into by the Disciplinary Committee of Sulom independently.”

Blue Eagles spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino in an interview called on Sulom to ensure the culprits are brought to book.

“As Blue Eagles, we welcome the move by Sulom to take disciplinary action regarding the recent incident. We believe that every team, regardless of stature, should be held to the same standards of conduct to preserve the integrity of the game.

“While we cannot speculate on why such incidents have repeatedly involved our goalkeepers, we remain concerned about the safety and focus of our players during matches. Football should be won through fair play on the pitch not through disruptions or psychological tactics.

“We hope that this time, the process will lead to decisive action that discourages similar incidents in the future. Our focus remains on maintaining professionalism and ensuring that our players are protected as they compete.”

Bullets, who sit second in the standings with 33 points, just one behind bitter rivals Mighty Wanderers, now have more than points they dropped against Eagles to worry about as the repeated towel saga could cost them dearly off the pitch.
