Pride and handsome prizes are at stake this Saturday in Salima as MultiChoice Malawi, for the first time since 2010, hosts Bwato Race involving 50 boats.

MultiChoice marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda on Wednesday said the race at Senga Bay is part of activities marking 50 years of Malawi’s independence.

“We will have several activities, but the Bwato Race is the main one as the lake is key to the success of Malawi and the fishermen provide us Chambo fish. There are 100 fishers involved in the race — two for each boat,” explained Nyirenda.

The race took place last year in Mangochi.

“We will give them prizes linked to fishing and the lake. The first prize is a fishing net, second prize a bicycle and the third a lamp,” he said.

Currently, the lake is hosting Lake Malawi Yatchting Marathon which started in Mangochi.
