CCJP holds primary justice awareness in Blantyre

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Lilongwe Diocese is holding a primary justice awareness campaign in Blantyre District, urging people to desist from and report gender-based violence (GBV) cases.

Under the programme, CCJP has been meeting group village heads (GVHs) and communities in six of the eight traditional authorities (T/As) since Monday, teaching people how they can deal with GBV.

Speaking in GVH Mchere in T/A Kapeni’s area on Wednesday, CCJP Southern Region primary justice coordinator Dalitso Mipando shared the consequences of GBV and advised the people to desist from the practice.

“It is high time men stopped perpetrating violence against women and children. GBV hinders development. It is counterproductive. Therefore, we urge you to report all forms of violence,” he said.

In her remarks, GVH Mchere encouraged the women in her area to  report GBV cases.

She said many women suffer in silence because of fear.

CCJP said Blantyre District has a high GBV prevalence rate.

The campaign, funded by UKAid, will cover T/As Chigalu, Lundu, Kuntaja, Kunthembwe, Kapeni and Nsomba. n
