Cdedi supports Cyclone Freddy survivors
Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (Cdedi) with support from its partners donated assorted food items on Tuesday at Nanchidwa Camp in Mulanje District in response to Cyclone Freddy.
The items included maize flour, soya pieces and cooking oil.
Cdedi executive director Sylvester Namiwa said the cyclone has caused immense damage and suffering to the affected Malawians.
He said: “We have noticed that there are some areas that are yet to be reached where they are in need of support due to the effects of the heavy rains the country experienced in the past two weeks.
“We asked well-wishers to join us to assist those who have not yet been reached with relief items.”
Namiwa further asked politicians to stop getting political mirage out of the disaster and leave everything to technical people.
“We further appeal to estate owners in Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe, and Nkhata Bay to release idle land to be shared voluntarily to those living in disaster-prone areas,” he said.
On his part, Nanchidwa community member Emmanuel Elijah said the donation will assist about 450 people in the camp who are in need of food, blankets, and shelter.
