President Lazarus Chakwera has assured Assemblies of God Church of his administration’s commitment to implementing policies aimed at transforming various sectors in pursuit of the realisation of the Malawi 2063.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with the church’s national leadership at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

He said: “We are not yet where we want to be, but we are not where we were. Progress is being made.”

The President highlighted the attainment of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF), which has resulted in the resumption of direct budget support by traditional donors, as a significant step in overcoming the current economic challenges.

The church’s president Bishop Andrew Dube commended Chakwera for the 2024/25 National Budget presented by Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda in Parliament on Friday, describing it as promising and achievable.

He said the financial allocations to sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, tourism, mining, and social services reflect a determination to improve the citizens’ quality of life.

“It is noteworthy that 30 percent of the K5.98 trillion Budget will be allocated to production projects. This demonstrates that the objective of the 2024/25 budget is to expedite economic recovery,” said Dube.

He said it was high time Malawi increased its production and exports.

“We hope that measures will be taken to address the current fiscal, forex, and debt crises in Malawi. We pray and believe this budget will be a step towards tackling these challenges,” said Dube.
