Chakwera in Mzuzu for bishop consecration

President Lazarus Chakwera arrived in Mzuzu yesterday for the consecration of Auxiliary Bishop-elect Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda of Mzuzu Diocese of the Catholic Church.

The ceremony is slated for tomorrow at Mzuzu Stadium.

The President was welcomed by hundreds of people, many clad in Malawi Congress Party, UTM Party and Freedom Party colours.

In an interview yesterday, the consecration committee’s chairperson Father Raymond Mwale said they expect a colourful event.

He said: “Indeed we have welcomed the President wholeheartedly. We look forward to a colourful ceremony when ordaining Bishop Nyirenda at the upper stadium tomorrow.”

Bishop Nyirenda was appointed as the auxiliary bishop of Mzuzu Diocese by Pope Francis in May this year

He was eventually assigned the titular see of Catrum, the Vatican’s recognition of his spiritual leadership qualities and contributions to the church.

Until his appointment as auxiliary bishop, Nyirenda was serving as the rector of Kasina Spiritual Formation Centre and assistant of Bishop John Alphonsus Ryan of Mzuzu Diocese.

Born on June 20 1976, Fr. Nyirenda was ordained a priest on  July 19 2008.
