Chaponda ordered to bring evidence of rigging claims
Parliament has ordered Leader of Opposition George Chaponda to bring evidence backing his allegations that the National Registration Bureau (NRB) is printing national identification cards at the National Food Reserve Agency premises in Kanengo, Lilongwe for rigging purposes
The NRB matter came for debate in the House yesterday, but Chitipa South legislator Werani Chilenga rose on a point of order and asked Chaponda to provide evidence of his allegations against the bureau, saying the House should not be debating an issue which has no evidence.
“Such allegations must be accompanied by evidence as proof that the activity is indeed taking place at the said location,” he said.
Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda agreed with Chilenga’s contribution which resulted in the House voting electronically for Chaponda to bring evidence substantiating his claims.
However, Democratic Progressive Party chief whip Jappie Mhango protested the vote and demanded to know the Standing Order used by the House to vote electronically on the matter.
But Chimwendo Banda explained that the House used Standing Order 18.
“It states that the House may vote electronically by pressing a button and that the results may be displayed on a screen instantly. So you see, the House in those days was looking ahead where technology was going to be advanced,” he said.
