Chaponda turns royal
Malawi’s comedy export Daliso Chaponda returns on the international limelight at one of the United Kingdom’s biggest charity events, the Royal Variety Performance.
He is set to be part of the cast of the charity, whose patron is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
Chaponda who is running free online comedy shows in a drive to lighten up the mood due to the devastating effects of Covid-19, confirmed the news in an interview.
“I am taking part in this year’s Royal Variety Performance. The Royal Variety Performance is a televised variety show that raises money for the Royal Variety Charity. It is attended by senior members of the British Royal Family,” he said.
However, due to Covid-19 pandemic, the audience will be virtual.
“This year will be a little different with a digital audience and no live audience because of Covid-19.
“It will still be broadcast worldwide with an audience of 150 million. I am looking forward to taking part in this show where everybody needs laughter,” said Chaponda.
The line-up includes Brit Award-winner and rising star Celeste, singer and Spice Girl Melanie C in an event to be held in Blackpool.
A statement from the show’s broadcaster ITV reads: “Also taking to the stage with a specially composed and heart-warming performance is musical comedian and Britain’s Got Talent 2020 winner Jon Courtenay. Plus more comedy from stand ups Jo Caulfield and Daliso Chaponda.”
According to the statement, his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will deliver a special message to the charity and the artists performing in the show.
The star studded spectacular will be screened on ITV in December. It will be produced by ITV Studios.
