Senior Chief Kaluluma of Kasungu on Friday expressed disappointment over the lack of interest in development projects by people of Kapirimnyanga in his area.

The chief said this when Plan Malawi handed over a village clinic and a house for health surveillance assistants worth K14 million which were completed behind schedule due to lack of community participation.

Plan Malawi Kasungu area manager Chris Katutu said the community did not show up when asked to contribute bricks and sand at the project site as required.

“I ask chiefs to encourage their people to be development-conscious because development goes to areas where people are willing to take part,” he said.

In response, Senior Chief Kaluluma said he was equally disappointed with his subjects, saying they have ashamed him.

“I am very saddened to learn that people were running away from this development project. Please don’t shame me. Let us do these projects together because they benefit our country,” he said.

The clinic has reduced the distance patients endured to access healthcare at Kaluluma Rural Hospital, several kilometres away.

Apart from the village clinic, Plan Malawi has also constructed a shelter and a road barrier at Nkhamenya road block, provided three second-hand motorcycles to the police, child protection volunteers and Kaluluma rural hospital respectively. n
