Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s case, where he is answering charges related to the Zunneth Sattar corruption investigation, has been committed to the Financial Crimes Court under the High Court of Malawi.

Chilima yesterday morning appeared before chief resident magistrate Madalitso Khoswe Chimwaza in Lilongwe where the State submitted a certificate of committal to the court.

Said Chimwaza: “The DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] has certified that your matter is suitable to be tried at the High Court, specifically at the Financial Crimes Court and the date will be assigned by that court.”

Chilima is being charged with six counts bordering on corrupt practices by a public officer, advantage for using influence in regard to contracts, and failing to make a full report to officers of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

He is being accused of corruptly receiving $280 000 from Sattar and $19 million for allegedly helping Sattar’s company to get a contract from the Malawi Defence Force and Malawi Police Service.

Chilima drove himself to the court in a Toyota TX, accompanied by his wife Mary. He wore a pin-striped grey suit while Mary sported a crimson red jacket with a black pair of slacks.

They both looked composed and wore a fair smile.

The court premises were filled with Chilima’s sympathisers, including UTM Party officials such as Patricia Kaliati and Shanil Muluzi. Scores of UTM Party followers stood by the court premises perimeter fence because they could not be allowed in.

This is Chilima’s second appearance in court after he was arrested in November 2022.
