The Chinese government will establish an Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centre to be used to teach local farmers modern agricultural technologies.

Chinese Ambassador Pan Hejun disclosed this during this year’s commemoration of Beijing’s 64th anniversary celebrations in Lilongwe.

Pan said while Malawi-China friendly and pragmatic cooperation has fully unfolded in such areas as agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, trade and investment, the country will take a special interest in agriculture.

“Agriculture is the base of the economy. An advanced agricultural sector makes it possible to develop other industries. The Chinese agricultural experts used to reach the vast areas in the country, helping the local farmers with practical techniques and skills.

“In order to introduce the technology to the rural communities, we are now busy preparing for the establishment of an Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centre in Salima. The centre will impart the necessary skills to local farmers on how they can enhance agriculture, thereby contributing to the Malawi economy. We are also drilling 600 boreholes in six districts of Malawi,” he explained.

China has already assisted Malawi government by establishing the Balaka Cotton Factory which is benefiting farmers by offering them ready market for their cotton produce.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Abel Kayembe hailed Chinese investment in Malawi saying Lilongwe does not take it for granted.

“China’s spirit of hard work continues to inspire the people of Malawi, as they endeavour to achieve sustainable socio economic development. The exponential growth which China has experienced over the years can be attributed to the hard working spirit of the Chinese people from which Malawians are eager to learn because we do not take the two country’s partnership for granted,” said Kayembe.
