Chisomo Children’s Club recently trained 21 care-givers in bereavement counselling, resilience building, conflict management and providing psychosocial support to children in children’s corners.

Children’s corners are places under community-based child care centres (CBCCs) where children go after school to play games and get psychosocial support.

The training, held with funding from the Norwegian Church Aid, brought together care-givers from Ndirande, Mbayani and Bangwe townships in Blantyre.

Chisomo Children’s Club team leader (Blantyre) Auspicious Ndamuwa said children face many challenges which impact negatively on their general well-being.

He cited poverty, death of parents, HIV and Aids as some of the challenges children face.

“As such, we want to build their resilience to overcome and not bow down to the challenges. Resilient children are more responsible for their lives and those of their siblings,” said Ndamuwa.

Trainer Lawrence Matiti, who is also Karonga district social welfare officer, said resilience is a skill that has to be learnt like any other.

He said resilient children have strong social attachments and are usually competent in different fields.

“Resilient children have good relationships with others, understand their emotions and are able to express their feelings.

“They are also creative, eager to learn, confident, positive and have hope for the future. In class, they do well and they usually think before they act,” said Matiti, adding that psychosocial support comes handy in dealing with most of the problems children find themselves in.

On bereavement counselling, he said it is aimed at offering an opportunity to children to ask questions, express themselves and share their experience.

“This helps facilitate recovery for the affected children,” said Matiti.
