Chitipa Council lauds livelihoods, Wash projects

Chitipa District Council chairperson Towerachalo Mnyenyembe has commended Lusubilo Community Care for transforming people’s lives through its livelihoods interventions.

The organisation has been implementing the Integrated Support for Orphans, Vulnerable Children and Youth Project in the district whose interventions included livestock pass-on programme, training people how to make manure and drilling boreholes.

Speaking in an interview on Friday in Sub-Traditional Authority (ST/A) Mwakabanga during the project’s phase out meeting, Mnyenyembe described Lusubilo Community Care as a true partner in development.

“People are now keeping livestock, making manure and have access to potable water.

“In addition, people have embraced a saving culture, courtesy of the project.”

Lusubilo Community Care project manager Kondwani Nyasulu hailed Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for funding the project.

“We are pleased that the three-year partnership with CRS has benefitted many people as we have drilled 33 boreholes and imparted business skills to beneficiaries,” he said.

Mercy Sichinga, a beneficiary, said she is now able to make Mbeya fertiliser, which helps her to realise bumper harvests.

CRS programmes manager David Munthali said he was pleased that the project has reached out to 97 percent of the 3 000 participants who are now food secure.

“We have also reached out to 42 primary schools with Likuni Phala under a school feeding programme,” he said.
