Chitipa District Council unveils K39m abattoir

 Chitipa District Council says it has built the new K39 million abattoir has to meet current public health standards and provide the district a convenient slaughterhouse.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Chitipa District Council spokesperson Aliko Munde said the old abattoir was a health risk as it was situated within Chitipa urban centre and near a residential area.

He said: “The council has, therefore, built a new one away from people’s residences. It is a modern abattoir and meets the required health standards.”

Chitipa Butchers Association secretary Charles Nyondo described the new abattoir as essential in as far as public health is concerned.

“The old slaughterhouse is small and there is no tap water. It is a health hazard as meat is easily contaminated because we could clean the abattoir regularly. The new one is modern with all the necessities,” he said.

The slaughterhouse has been constructed with funding from the World Bank through National Local Government Finance Committee under Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project
