Chiwaula eyes Sulom veep post

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) acting vice-president Ronald Chiwaula says he will contest for the league’s veep post at its annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for March 1 at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.

The position fell vacant after its former occupant Colonel Gilbert Mittawa was ushered in as president. He replaced Fleetwood Haiya, who was elected Football Association of Malawi president in December 2023.

Chiwaula, who was appointed acting veep by Sulom executive committee meeting in July last year, confirmed his intention to vie for the post.

“I want to continue assisting the president and the entire executive in implementing the revive, reform and rebrand agenda as the country is in pursuit of football transformation,” he said.

So far, the former Civil Service United general secretary (GS) is the only one who has declared interest in the post.

Article 29 of the Sulom constitution partly states that should there be a vacancy in the executive committee, it [the executive committee] shall appoint a replacement in an acting capacity.

Article 26 reads: “Should a position become vacant, the executive committee may fill the vacant position until the next general meeting , when a replacement will be elected for the remaining term of the mandate.”

Meanwhile, Suloom GS Williams Banda has said the general assembly will also review the 2024 season.

“We will also plan for the new season,” he said.
