Civo coach Oscar Kaunda, whose job was likely to be rendered useless, was relieved on Sunday after emerging champions of the two-day Intercity Soccer Fiesta at Civo Stadium.

Civo beat Silver Strikers 3-0 and Blue Eagles 12-11 in the finals through post-match penalty shoot-outs to take home K2 million.

Elevated to head coach: Kaunda

The visibly excited Kaunda said in an interview he was relieved with the triumph.

“We did not do well in the first-round of the TNM Super League, so, this has been like a consolation to the team and supporters.

Civo have won no trophy for five years. The last cup they won was the Presidential Cup in 2010 when they beat Silver Strikers 1-0 at Civo Stadium.

They won the Super League once in 1987.

“This is the turning point and our players have hunger for goals and with this rhythm, we are expecting to be a changed side in the second-round,” said Kaunda.

Civo general secretary Rashid Ntelela said he was impressed with the way the team played in both games.

“We wanted to meet Big Bullets in the finals to beat them as well,” said Ntelela.

In the first-round, the servants finished on position 10 with 16 points.
