Colourful gig sells condom use

condomiseA colourful free dance hosted at the College of Medicine (CoM) by United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) as part of its campaign to increase condom use among the youth in the country ended on a high note with patrons saying they have benefitted.

Both Friday night and Saturday, patrons were donned in black T-shirts with colourful imprints in neon pink, blue, yellow and green beckoning them to condomise accessorised with green and black sunglasses with the same message.

In separate interviews two CoM students identified as Mike and Joe stated that the choice of artists was perfect and they had learnt one or two things they never knew about condom use.

“It’s been educational actually. The artists are the people we listen to nowadays,” said Mike, adding that it would be helpful if condoms were made available at their college campus.

“It was great to be able to learn about use of condoms and I was also able to get a supply that can last me till the end of the year. It’s always hard to buy condoms when you might meet your abusa [pastor] or aunt or uncle in the shop. We get judged,” noted Joe.

On Friday night, the gig attracted performances from Piksy, Blak Jak, and Dare Devils before the stage was set for yet another dance showdown on Saturday afternoon with a maiden performance by Maskal followed by Dare Devils.

Piksy, who was also present, failed to perform as he had lost his voice due to a cold but Maziko Band filled the gap with a reggae performance.

Throughout the performances, the youth were able to learn about correct condom use, make condom art and pins and also sample flavoured lubricants.

Condoms, T-shirts and sun glasses were distributed.

Condomize! is a joint programme of the UNPFA and The Condom Project in partnership with UNaids and the Condom Inter-Agency Task Team.

Malawi is the first UNFPA country to rollout the campaign which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
