Community members around Chisalankhanga in Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga District have asked authorities to construct a clinic in the area.

Speaking on Sunday during a campaign rally Malawi Congress Party (MCP) organised to woo voters for Elisha Bwinga ahead of local government by-election in Lupembe Ward, a representative of village head Ngosi, Aggrey Kayumba said women walk long distances to Mwenilondo Health Centre to access under-five services.

“The clinic will also handle minor illnesses among children,” he said.

Mkandawire (L) being welcomed at the rally

On his part, MCP deputy regional chairperson Uchizi Mkandawire (North-North) said government is committed to providing people with social amenities.

“That is why the Tonse Alliance government increased the Constituency Development Fund from K40 million to K100 million to cater for such needs,” he said.

Mkandawire urged people to vote for Bwinga, who will work with Karonga Central legislator Leonard Mwalwanda to develop the area.

On the same Sunday, UTM Party publicity secretary Frank Mwenifumbo was at Mwenilondo ground canvassing for votes for his party’s candidate Atusaye Mwenifundo where he told prospective voters to elect their candidate to develop the area.

In an interview, UTM party district governor Honest Sichinga said Atusaye is development conscious.

The by-election follows the death of Vincent Kayuni in December last year.

Other candidates include Innocent Kalesi Gondwe of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Ken Simsokwe of Alliance for Democracy.

Last week MCP and DPP appealed to their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the campaign period.

Previously, political violence marred elections in Karonga Central, a development that was widely condemned by electoral stakeholders.

Malawi Electoral Commission will on August 23 2022 also conduct by-elections in Wenya Ward in Chitipa Wenya Constituency and Shire Ward in Balaka Central East Constituency.
