Congratulations flow for Mutharika
Messages of goodwill and congratulations continue to flow for former president Peter Mutharika following his triumph in the September 16 presidential race.
Politicians, Inter-University Network for Peace, Unity and Development (INPUD) and the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) yesterday joined Malawians in extending the messages.
Individiual politicians included Vice-President Michael Usi, former vice-president Cassim Chilumpha, People’s Development Party (PDP) president Kondwani Nankhumwa and People’s Transformation Party (Petra) president Kamuzu Chibambo.

Usi said Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party and his running mate Jane Ansah have been given an “overwhelming mandate” by Malawians to govern the country for the next five years and that the will of the people must be respected.
“I stand ready to hand over the mantle of the constitutional office of the Vice-President to Dr Jane Ansah,” he said in his statement.
Similarly, Chilumpha, who was Veep between 2004 and 2009, said “Malawians have spoken”, therefore, it is a collective responsibility to respect their will and work together for the betterment of the nation.
He said: “I therefore urge all Malawians to embrace unity and support the new government as it embarks on the important task of leading our country forward… I have no doubt that the President-elect will lead with dedication and integrity.”
Nankhumwa, who competed in the presidential election under PDP, congratulated his former boss Mutharika for his ‘resounding’ victory.
On his part, Chibambo congratulated Mutharika for triumphing in the election.
In its statement signed by chairperson Master Dicks Mfune, INPUD said: “We would also like to congratulate the incoming 7th State President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, for emerging as a winner in this general election.”
