Cops await arrears 9 months after court order

Malawi Government is yet to honour a High Court of Malawi Commercial Division order to pay 53 graduate police officers salary arrears totalling K425 million nine months after the ruling.

The officers have since threatened to move the courts again to claim the payment with compound interest, arguing that the money has lost value following the kwacha devaluation.

The court said the payments were to be made within 30 days after the ruling.

But chairperson of the aggrieved officers, Superintendent Chitenthe Kachali, said in an interview yesterday that they are yet to get the payments.

“We are contemplating to move the court to include compound interests on our arrears,” he said.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed in a separate interview yesterday that the 53 police officers are yet to be paid the arrears as ordered by the court, but said the matter is in the Attorney General’s office.

On the other hand, Ministry of Justice spokesperson Frank Namangale confirmed that the AG was aware of the case in question, but asked for more time to review the relevant file and its particulars.
