Copyright Fund in fifth creative support

The Copyright Fund has called on creatives to apply for support of their arts and heritage project.

Established by the government through Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma), the fund provides financial assistance to individuals and organisations to promote the growth of creative projects and increase awareness about copyright and piracy issues.

Speaking on the call, Copyright Fund chairperson Christopher Magomelo encouraged creatives to take advantage of the opportunity by bringing forward proposals to develop the sector..

“All those that want to carry out projects in the arts and culture industries should give it a shot and follow the process. Where they do not understand, they should reach out to us,” he said.

Magomelo added that funding allocation has been increased to address the impact of devaluation and ensure that artists have the necessary resources to achieve impactful results.

“The goal is to continue supporting innovative projects that have a lasting impact on the creative industry,” he said.

The allocation has been raised from K10 million to K15 million for national projects, K10 million from K7 million for district projects while community projects are at K5 million from K3 million.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from artists who see it as an opportunity to bring their arts and creative projects to life.

Digital content creator Lameck Luhanga said it will unlock potential for creatives in the country.

“With more of these funds available, it is encouraging more unique ideas to come forward since they are chosen based on the strength of the proposals. It is really about the best ideas being put to fruition,” he said.

In an earlier interview, last year’s fund beneficiary Tay Grin said the development of the art and culture industries rely on such kind of support.

He was awarded K10 million for his project Harmony Across Border which takes on board local talent and showcase and promote the country’s art and heritage.

Since its inception, the fund has supported 12 projects and benefited more than 100 000 people, according to Cosoma
