Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors at Mponda Evacuation Centre in Mangochi District have asked well-wishers to help them with building materials.

They made the call on Saturday when RiseUp Malawi donated assorted items worth K2 million to 315 survivors.

Matilda Chisala from Kella Village in Senior Chief Mponda said her house was destroyed by floods and she would not be able to raise resources to construct another.

She said: “Life at the camp is a living hell. We struggle to get food, there is shortage of toilets and washrooms and safe water.

“We think that the best way to help us is to support us with building materials.”

Chisala said they want to return to their homes to help their children prepare for third term which starts next Monday.

Amina Yusuf from Makawa Village, also echoed Chisala’s sentiments, saying it will be safe to stay in their homes.

“The more we stay at the camp, the more we expose ourselves to waterborne diseases,” she said.

On his part, RiseUp Malawi country director Hurdson Mwale said they donated the items because after learning that people at the camp had no food.

“As an organisation implementing livelihood interventions in the district, we thought it was important to make the donations,” he said.

Mangochi District Civil Society Organisations Network vice-chairperson Dickens Mahwayo commended RiseUp Malawi for the support.

The items included flour, plastic buckets, plates, soya pieces, cups, soap, salt and water guard.
