Day after tomorrow

In his debut book, Allan Folson, serves a chilling cocktail of revenge and murder. A child who witnesses the shooting of his father in a busy American street is driven by revenge up into his adulthood as a medical doctor.
In transit back home to America from Switzerland, the doctor catches sight of his father’s killer, pursues him and when he is about to strangle him to death, the killer reveals that he was actually sent to kill the old man.
The doctor embarks on a fresh hunt for the schemer of his father’s death, turning it into an endless chase that is The Day After Tomorrow.
A similar script is unfolding in the 2013 TNM Super League where every week, the killer gets killed, but there is simply no ultimate winner or champion in sight.
When Red Lions edged Big Bullets 3-2 at Kamuzu Stadium recently, little did they know that Mafco would haunt them with a 2-0 beating, paving the way for their downward spiral and Mafco’s elevation.
It was the same with Silver Strikers. They recently crushed Kamuzu Barracks (KB) 2-1, then edged Mponela United 1-0 and just when the Bankers thought they would climb top, Blue Eagles beat them 1-0. To their credit, Silver have bounced back.
So this season, the league leadership has changed from the Lions, KB and at the time of writing, Mafco with Silver poised to taste life at the top.
So crazy is this year’s league that teams that were challenging for the top four honours such as Blantyre United are fighting for survival.
Yet not too long ago teams such as Silver, Mighty Wanderers and Bullets would open unassailable leads.
Does this close contest represent any good news for Malawi football? FAM president Walter Nyamilandu recently gave a yes-and-no answer, saying “the local league is now very competitive, but the quality of play itself can get better.”
Could it be a diplomatic way of saying it is not good enough? Surely, most Super League teams hardly string more than five uninterrupted passes.
Last season, Silver piped Bullets to the championship on goal difference, this year it might even be decided by head-to-head. The champion designate will surely be known a day after tomorrow.
