Delays to complete technical college disappoints minister

Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation Joel Chigona has expressed disappointment over the delay to complete Nsoni Community Technical College in Chiradzulu District.

He said this on Wednesday when he inspected the project whose construction started in 2019 but stalled in 2021.

“I am disappointed that the project is taking long to complete. We do not know what we were waiting for. However, we are committed to ensuring that the construction project resumes and is completed by July 2026,” said Chigona.

The minister said once completed, the institution will help build capacity among the youth in the district as they will have easy access to technical education and entrepreneurship skills.

Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) board chairperson Gilbert Chilinde said as the regulator of the country’s technical institutions, they are doing everything possible to ensure that all unfinished technical institutions are completed.

He, however, said there are many colleges that have been completed, but do not have the equipment to start training the youth in various technical and entrepreneurial courses.

“We know that the majority of Malawians are young people. Therefore, we should use the opportunity to equip young people with the right skills to achieve the country’s long-term development plan, Malawi 2063,” said Chilinde.

Chiradzulu district director of economic planning and development Smith Mnenula said the minister’s visit signifies government’s commitment to completing the construction works.
