The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) on Wednesday presented assorted food items to a Balaka family affected by a road accident in which nine of its members died in Machinga last week.
Government also donated food items to about 3 000 other families from the area’s four group village heads (GVHs) Dailesi, Makwinja, Kuntiyani and Mtelera.
Speaking before distributing the items, Dodma director of response and recovery, Harris Kachale said the donation followed the pledge Vice-President Everton Chimulirenji made to assist the family.
“The loss was tragic, but we also heard that the community at large needed urgent food assistance. That is why government responded quickly,” he said.
In his remarks, Balaka district commissioner Ali Phiri commended government for the rapid response.
Rozina Chazemba, 42, one of the members of the bereaved family, thanked government for coming to their rescue during such a difficult time.
