ECD Advocacy Week launch ends in chaos

Listen to this article

Some people who attended the launch of ECD Advocacy Week at Tukombo primary school in Nkhata Bay have confisticated tents over failure by organisers to feed children and provide allowances.

The irate people accuse the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare of failing to promote the welfare of people especially children.

Throughout the seven hours of the event, people, especially children, endured a scorching sun. They were never provided with water or any other foods.

Traditional Authority Zilakoma in an interview said some groups that performed dances like Malipenga got angry and confisticated the tents which belong to Nkhata Bay District Hospital.

“The problem is that chiefs were not involved. Organisers made invitations on their own and people expected something.

“They are also angry that children were not given anything, not even water, yet it was too hot today. But I have called for a meeting and we will see how to deal with the matter.

One of the organisers, Lickson Ng’ambi, who is also District Social Welfare Officer for Nkhata Bay  has said a partner who committed to provide the food and water did not turn up for the event.

“However, other partners have committed to provide the neccesities and my office will ferry them to the CBCC’s where the children came from,” said Ng’ambi.

Ironically, in their songs and poems, which attracted applause from the audience, the children demanded that parents provide them with good food.

The launch under the theme“Promoting Positive Parenting and Early Learning, brought together several institutions and organisations that promote ECD in the country.
