Ecobank golf team outsmarted 11 contenders during the Blantyre Rotary Club (BRC) Fundraising Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club last Friday to win the charity competition.

John Suzi Banda, Hitler Sigauke, Wakisa Mwalwafu and Hudson Kantwanje pulled the strings for the bank to win on 77 points whereas Nico Investment Managers Limited, comprising Harold Lungu, Zacharia Hara, H. Nyekanyeka and youthful Symon Moses claimed the second slot on 76 points.

The competition, which aimed at raising at least K1.5 million (about $3 750) for the completion of Mpapa Full Primary School in Blantyre, also saw Justice John Chatsala hitting the longest drive and swinging nearest to the pin on the 12th hole.

“We have done it for the kids who will benefit from this fundraising tournament. We had fun on the greens. Our thoughts about the plight of the pupils at Mpapa fired us up and here we are, carrying medals in our hands,” said Ecobank captain Banda during prize presentation.

According to Blantyre Rotary Club’s president Doreen Chanje, the event raised the targeted amount.

“About five years ago, one of our members identified Mpapa as an area in great need of a proper primary school after noting that pupils were learning under trees. A commercial city such as Blantyre does not deserve to have such makeshift schools. We are grateful to our sponsors for helping us in this initiative,” she said.

Apart from Ecobank and Nico Investment Managers, other companies that took part in the contest were third-placed Malswitch, Carlsberg Malawi, Toyota Malawi, TNM, CDH, Gestetner, Packaging Industries, National Bank, Real Insurance and TEM.
