Conjugal activities and prostitution are a must address in today’s society. Yet our culture considers taboo to talk about the issues.
Pamtondo (women’s meeting place) has been one place where women voice out their family experiences. However, there is need to create more platforms for people to freely address such issues in this HIV/Aids era and musicians Edgar ndi Davis seem to have the answer.
Whether the duo eavesdropped on women at pamtondo is besides the point, but in their track Ndiwo Za Pakhomo they creatively address some of the issues that women face.
In the song, the duo creates an analogy of the importance of home relish versus restaurant food. In the chorus the duo sings; Ndiwo za pakhomo zikudandaula/ife kuno sitikudyedwa (home relish is complaining we are not being eaten). The artists replace the wives with girlfriends/prostitutes thereby addressing a controversial topic they could not have if put in explicit language. If it was rated it would be good for family listening.
The artists go on to say that when men get home they do not even want to eat but just proceed to bed (A bambo pobwela usiku amakhala atadya kale koyenda amangogona). In its crude sense, the duo is saying men are not performing their conjugal right but they just go straight to bed as they have already enjoyed the company of other women.
