It was an evening of jazz music when musicians Erik Paliani and McLuther performed virtually for Mibawa Television audiences on Friday.

Dressed elegantly, McLuther opened the floor with a list of his songs, including Zinkachitika Kale, Bwelera and The Resolve.

Paliani: Malawians have always loved jazz music

But it was his last song Zapadziko, his own rendition of Stonard Lungu’s song, that proved to be a darling with audiences based on their responses in the comment sections of Mibawa social media pages.

“I will end my performance by inviting the legend himself. Erik, come and join me as I play this legendary song,” said McLuther as Paliani joined him for the performance of Zapadziko.

Then Paliani took over and performed a list of various jazz songs, including Chitukutuku, which he performed with McLuther.

With the support of Jay Jay Munthali on the guitar, Dan Khoviwa on the keyboards, Phillip Chitsonga on bass, Ralph Chitsonga on the drums, both performances were impressive.

In an interview, Paliani said that alongside other jazz players he will do everything to bring back the jazz  culture in Malawi.

“Malawians have always loved jazz music. I get many people asking me why I still play jazz. The answer is simple; jazz is the mother genre and I will do everything to promote it,” he said.

Reacting to the performances, fans took to the comments section of Mibawa Television Facebook page.

Wrote Mathews Douglas Sitima: “Erik you are amazing. I didn’t know that we still have Malawians that play Jazz so beautifully.”

Another fan, Rafiq Makwinja, wrote: “Nice voice McLuther. Good music.”

During the show, McLuther also debuted the video for his new single The Resolve.

The virtual show was hosted by presenters TD and Lilia.

Dubbed The Ultimate Jazz Experience, the event was sponsored by HB, Safintra and Amaryllis Hotel, among others.
