Whenever coach Mario Gadaga kisses the Kamuzu Stadium turf just know his Evirom FC have won.

For the fourth time this season, Gadaga did it again yesterday afternoon to celebrate a significant 1-0 upset of complacent Blantyre United at an empty Kamuzu Stadium.

The win stretched Evirom’s tally to 17 points from 21 games but the sad thing is that they are still stuck second from the bottom of the TNM Super League table.

The only good thing is that after Harold Zulu’s third-minute goal, Gadaga remained even more upbeat about survival. Such are Evirom’s uncharacteristic wins this season that they have also defeated Azam Tigers, Civo United and Silver Strikers.

“I told the media that my team is not here to donate points and I repeat that we will survive in the Super League. We will fight until the very last game. The key to this win was to score an early goal,” Gadaga said in a post-match interview.

During the game watched by a handful of fans, Evirom were for the larger part of the game first on the ball.

In contrast, United looked too much in the comfort zone, giving away possession cheaply, especially after the break.

Principal striker Sparrow Msowoya lacked decent services and was forced to drop deep to get the ball.

On the other end, Evirom looked sharper upfront. Chikondi Mpulula, Tadala Masamba and Wongani Zulu should have punished United, but they missed.

The Elia Kananji-side, which looked to have hit form, has not recovered since losing a Standard Bank Cup quarter-final to Silver Strikers and later a league defeat to Red Lions.

“If we cannot win games like these, then we should forget the top-four finish we achieved last season. It hurts,” said Kananji after the match.
