FAM has asked up-and-coming coaches not to be motivated by money, but rather to have passion for their career.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka said this on Wednesday when he closed the two-week C Licence Coaching Course organised by the Southern Region Football Coaches Committee (SRFCC) at Saint Andrew’s High School in Blantyre.

“You should prioritise advancing your careers other than monetary gains because that comes when you have established yourselves. You need to establish yourselves by taking the initiative to help drill school, junior and community teams that lack qualified coaches,” said Zakazaka.

He asked the trainee coaches to execute what they have learnt during the course.

“You have been here for 10 good days, do not just obtain the certificates and put them in your suitcases waiting for an opportunity to arise,” he said.

He further urged other regional football coaches committees to emulate their Southern Region counterparts, SRFCC, in discharging their duties to perfection.

SRFCC chairperson, Lloyd Nkhwazi, said they were impressed with the turn-out of 57 participants.

“We are also thankful to individuals and companies that contributed towards the course in cash or kind, notably Robin’s Park, O.M Cosmetics, Owen Chomanika, TNM and Kips Restaurant.

“Above all, I would like to thank FAM for releasing their technical officials to conduct this course free of charge,” said Nkhwazi.

One of the participants, former Flames international James Sangala, described the course as an eye-opener.

“We are looking forward to the challenge and I urge other experienced coaches to offer us their support,” said Sangala.

Apart from Sangala, other notable former big-name players that attended the course were Peter Mponda, Victor Phiri, Themba Ntontholo, Swadick Sanudi, Clement Kafwafwa, Vales Kamzere, Ojukwu Malunga, Elia Kananji, Simeon Kapuza, Joseph Gatros, Fundi Akidu, Kondwani Gawani, Clement Mandala, Mike Banda, Safalao Pompi, Lawrence Mnenula and Allan Chikafa. Retired assistant referee Moffat Champiti also attended the course.
