FAM ex-co maintains Flames backroom staff
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee (ex-co) has resolved to maintain the immediate-past Flames’ interim technical panel.
A source confided in The Nation yesterday that this followed the ex-co’s decision to approve FAM technical subcommittee’s recommendation to hire former FCB Nyasa Bullets gaffer Kallisto Pasuwa as coach.
“The ex-co felt it was imperative that the former backroom staff should be left intact, having worked under Pasuwa during the last two [2025] Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] qualifiers,” said the source.

Among others, the backroom staff includes current Bullets coach Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda as first assistant coach and his Moyale Barracks counterpart Pritchard Mwansa as second assistant coach.
Others are Silver Strikers coach Peter Mgangira, who will be maintained as physical fitness trainer and Bullets team manager James Chilapondwa, who will continue in a similar role.
The source further said the meeting agreed to offer Pasuwa a two-year deal.
He also said issues of targets and perks were not discussed.
“But was agreed that when the draft contract is prepared it should be shared with executive committee members for their perusal,” said the source
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya yesterday said: “We usually release our resolutions and we will share you a copy [once they are ready].”
Mponda and Mgangira yesterday said they could not comment as they are yet to be officially informed about the resolution.
Said Mponda: “If anything, the communication will have to come through my employers [Bullets], then a decision will be made on the way forward.”
Bullets acting chief executive officer (CEO) Albert Chigoga also said they are yet to be communicated by FAM.
“But we will not block the coach from offering his assistance. We will always support the national teams in the technical roles,” he said.
Similarly, Silver CEO Patrick Chimimba said: “We haven’t seen the resolution yet and, as such, it would be difficult to comment.”
Pasuwa and his backroom staff’s first task will be the Flames next 2026 World Cup qualifier against Namibia’s Brave Warriors in March.
The Malawi National Football Team is also expected to take part in the delayed 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) qualifying play-offs.
