FAM eyes k1BN for scorchers
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has embarked on a campaign to raise K1 billion for the Scorchers’ maiden participation at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.
The fundraising campaign will culminate in a send-off dinner at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on July 10.
FAM commercial and marketing manager Mayamiko Kafwamba said the First Lady Gertrude Mutharika will be the guest of honour at the event, which will also see the unveiling of a limited-edition Scorchers jersey.

He said: “Our target is to raise K1 billion. The money will go towards accommodation, camping and air travel for the team.”
Kafwamba said there are different sponsorship packages, with a platinum table pegged at K20 million, a gold table at K10 million and a silver table at K5 million while individual tickets are selling for K1 million. People can contact us or send us an email to purchase tables.”
To maximise sales, Kafwamba said the association has launched a door-to-door campaign in Blantyre and Lilongwe.
“In Blantyre, the campaign starts today under the leadership of the city’s mayor Isaac Jomo Osman while in Lilongwe, it will be led by Mrs Ivy Chinangwa [Malawi National Council of Sports acting chief executive officer],” he said.
Apart from the government’s support, through Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, National Bank of Malawi plc are the official sponsors for the Scorchers, pumping in K130 million.
In an interview yesterday, Osman, who is one of the pioneers of women’s football sponsorship and owns Women’s Premiership side Kukoma Ntopwa, called on individuals and the corporate world to assist the Scorchers.
“Participation at the tournament needs a lot of money. The money from the government and National Bank of Malawi plc is not enough,” he said.
The Scorchers, who qualified for their debut Wafcon finals after eliminating Angola, are in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Egypt and neighbours Zambia.
