FAM president speaks on RVG’s future

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu says a review of Flames coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) will be made three months prior to the expiry of his contract.

FAM hired RVG on a two-year contract in April last year.

Nyamilandu (L): It’s premature

The FAM president was responding to a question on whether the association has started working on succession plan.

“It’s rather premature now to consider the future position of the national coach.

“A review of the contract will be made three months prior to expiry,” he said.

On his part, RVG said he will make recommendations to FAM towards the end of the year.

“2018 will be a busy year in terms of international engagements because we will have the Cosafa Cup, the [2019] Africa Cup of Nations [Afcon] and Under-20 Afcon qualifiers and then we will also have Olympics Tokyo 2020 [Under-23] qualifiers.

“So, I think this year will give us a clear picture on which direction and a good view we are supposed to take.

“As a panel we are working very hard and as we go on, we will see how we can become strong, but honestly at the moment I do not have a concrete position,” he said.

However, RVG said it is his hope that the bulk of the current set-up will be maintained going forward.

Recently, RVG appointed South Africa-based Patrick ‘General’ Mabedi and Peter Mponda as his assistants and maintained Swadick Sanudi as goalkeeper trainer and James Sangala as team manager.

But Mabedi turned down the offer after consulting his employers— South African Premier Soccer Lague (PSL) outfit Kaizer Chiefs where he works as interim coach.

Nevertheless, he appears to have developed a strong bond with Mponda.

RVG has won two out of 12 games. He has drawn six and lost four.
