Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says it is undecided on whether to support Royal Morocco Football Federation’s (RMFF) 2030 World Cup bid.

The association’s stance comes after Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee (ex-co) unanimously agreed to support the North Africans’ bid.

Nyamilandu: We are yet to be informed

Morocco recently announced at the 73rd Fifa Congress in Kigali that it is bidding to host the 2030 Fifa World Cup in partnership with Spain and Portugal.

After the ex-co meeting, CAF president Patrice Motsepe said that Morocco’s bid is Africa’s bid.

He said: “The unanimous decision that was taken by the CAF executive committee to support Morocco’s bid to host the Fifa World Cup 2030 means that the bid is now the bid of the African continent.

But FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said the association will wait for Morocco’s presentation before it can commit to support its bid.

He said: “CAF will most likely brief us at the next general assembly in July so that we can internalise the matter and make an informed decision. It is most likely that  Morocco will also make a presentation to FAs at the AGM.

“The decision by CAF is very recent so we are yet to be informed. This will be done at the AGM.”

In 2018, FAM supported Morocco’s  2026 World Cup hosting bid which they lost to a joint USA, Canada and Mexico bid.

Malawi was one of the few CAF members that voted for Morocco’s bid while the majority went for the joint bid.

FAM’s support was connected to Morocco’s promise to construct a K3.6 billion football complex in Lilongwe.

The project never materialised,
