Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wants the National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) to take over the running of NBM Women’s Premiership as part of empowering the affiliate.
However, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said for this to happen, the women’s football body should have its own secretariat just like the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) which manages the men’s FDH Bank Premiership.
Speaking on the sidelines of National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc’s unveiling of K2.3 billion football sponsorship for the 2026/27 season, which includes K400 million for the women’s league, Haiya said FAM’s direct involvement in the administration of the competition should eventually end.
“All along, the national women’s football league has been managed in the arms of FAM, but this has to change.
“As you know, Sulom is left to manage the men’s elite league sponsorship and operations. This could apply to women’s football,” he said.
Haiya said an independent NWFA secretariat would improve the management and transparency of the women’s game.
“It’s not easy to manage such games. The NWFA should not only rely on FAM, but scale up their operations.
“That way, it is also easy for transparency. In future, NWFA will be signing sponsorship contracts on its own and not FAM,” he said.
NWFA chairperson Adelaide Migogo described FAM’s proposal as an eye-opener and said the association would discuss the matter.
