Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Women’s National Football Championship finalists are almost complete following the conclusion of regional leagues’ fixtures last weekend.

Ten teams qualify for the finals with each regional league contributing three teams. The other slot will go to a side that will excel in play-offs involving teams that finished fourth in the regional leagues.

The South will be represented by defending national champions and regional victors Kukoma Ntopwa, FCB Nyasa Bullets Women and Mighty Wanderers Queens.

The Centre will have their regional champions Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Lionesses, runners-up Ascent Academy and third-placed Silver Strikers Ladies while the North has Moyale Barracks Sisters, second-placed MK Academy and third-positioned CY Sisters.

The other finalists will be identified after play-offs involving Bvumbwe FC  from the South, Civil Service Women from the Centre and Ekwendeni Sisters from the North.

FAM media officer Patuma Tonex said: “The play-offs will be held just before the national finals next year.”

MDF Lionesses won the regional championship on Sunday when they thrashed Blue Eagles Ladies 5-1 at Nankhaka ground in Lilongwe.

They finished the eight-team league  with 37 points, two ahead of runners-up Ascent and four better than third-placed Silver Ladies.

In the last match of the South League on Sunday, Ntopwa suffered their first defeat of the season after going down 1-0 to Bullets Women at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

However, they still  finished top with 39 points, two ahead of Bullets and 19 above Wanderers. National Women’s Football Association  chairperson Adellaide Migogo said they are happy with the competitiveness of the leagues and they expect fireworks in the finals.
