Farmers under Tifikepo Farmer Field School (FFS) at Ekwaiweni Zombwe Extension Planning Area in Mzimba district have pledged to continue implementing Kulima and Afikepo projects.

The farmers expressed their sentiments when the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) handed over the two projects to Mzimba-North Agriculture Office.

Tifikepo FFS president Modester Ziba said they will pass on the knowledge to other farmers.

Chikuni: The initiatives need to be sustained

She said: “We will not abandon the projects because they are significant to our lives.

“We thank FAO and Unicef for mentoring us on different techniques to achieve sustainable livelihoods.”

On her part, Mzimba FAO projects coordinator Wezzie Kumwenda said while the European Union has discontinued funding for the two projects, FAO, Unicef and other partners have committed to sustain the project gains.

“Farmers own vast knowledge on modern farming, nutrition and we have impacted them with village saving loans. The economic empowerment initiatives need to be sustained,” she said.

M’Mbelwa District Council director of planning and development Walter Chikuni said the projects have high probability to be sustained since most of the trained staff are still with the council.
